(oh, and if you’re reading this and thinking about going all comment-tastic on me for assuming the guilt of these players, please note that I wouldn’t even have to believe that a rape occured to not think that this particular group of men were the kinds of heroes I would want my kids to emulate – saying things like ‘thank your grandpa for my cotten shirt’, ‘skinning the bitches’, and threatening sex workers with assault by broomstick is enough to make me not a fan. And, what exactly is it that would make you a fan?)

Duke’s scandal-plagued men’s lacrosse team made its return to the field Saturday, and several Lower Hudson Valley residents were part of the action.
The Blue Devils, who competed in an exhibition fall tournament at the Dean G. Skelos Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, canceled the remainder of the 2006 season on April 5 after three of their players were charged with rape.
Duke, a 2005 national finalist, played three games (against Towson, Hofstra and New York Tech), with the Hofstra game drawing the most interest because newly named Duke coach John Danowski had coached Hofstra for the last 21 years.
Tommy Dooley, a 2005 Yorktown graduate who set a rookie scoring record at Hofstra last year, played under Danowski at Hofstra last season. Danowski recruited freshman Tom Interlicchio, an all-America midfielder also from Yorktown, to play at Hofstra. Pat Watson, a 2005 Yorktown graduate, transferred to Hofstra after playing for Denison last year.
“It was a bit weird seeing Coach Danowski on the other sideline because he was the one to recruit me, and we got to know each other,” said Interlicchio, who has performed well in practices and earned a spot on Hofstra’s first midfield line. “But I just went on with the game and exchanged a friendly handshake with him at the end of the game.
“It was a pretty emotional game for the guys that were on the team last year, but (new Hofstra) Coach (Seth) Tierney kept reminding us that all he wanted to see was all our effort left on the field.”
Hofstra won 10-9 before a large crowd.
“We had like 1,000 people watching,” Interlicchio said. “After the game, we signed autographs for some of the little kids, which was cool, and so much different than high school.”
Duke ended the day by playing the New York Institute of Technology, whose roster includes freshmen Jake DeLillo of Yorktown and Evan Mager of Suffern. DeLillo had a goal and an assist against Duke.
Torres excels for Central Florida: North Rockland graduate Michael Torres, a junior on the Central Florida football team, kicked a 22-yard field goal with six seconds remaining in a 23-22 win over Marshall last week.
The Thiells resident, who had three field goals and two extra points in the game, was one of three players named Lou Groza collegiate place-kicker stars of the week, joining Indiana’s Austin Starr and USC’s Mario Danelo.
Vergari joins Texas football team: Former Bronxville High School standout Carl Vergari has earned a spot on the sixth-ranked University of Texas football team as a walk-on. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Vergari made the squad as a defensive end. Texas (5-1) will host Baylor on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Honor roll: Cold Spring’s Ryan McConville, a senior linebacker at St. Lawrence, was named Liberty League co-defensive player of the week after having five tackles and a key interception in a 42-38 win against Rensselaer. … Carmel’s Lindsay Southard, a freshman at Manhattan, was named MAAC cross country runner of the week after placing third last week at the Metropolitan Championships at Van Cortlandt Park. Southard, who finished the 5K race in 18:54, led the Jaspers to a fourth-place finish in the 12-team event. A week earlier, Southard clocked a 22: 46.7 at Iona’s Meet of Champions for the third-best time in that distance in program history. … Chappaqua’s Matt Linde, a senior at Tufts, was named to the all-New England Small College Athletic Conference second team after finishing in a tie for 10th overall at the conference championships. … Briarcliff Manor’s Eric Wiley, a freshman at Lafayette, was a Patriot League men’s tennis player of the month honorable mention selection after going 6-1 in singles and 3-0 in doubles.
Quick hitters: Port Chester’s Chris Lore, a sophomore tight end at Albany, had his first career touchdown reception — on an 11-yard pass — in a 33-21 loss to Stony Brook. … Yonkers’ Gabrielle Hopkins, a freshman at Post University, had 44 set assists, eight digs and six aces in a 3-2 loss to Stonehill. Somers’ Samantha Marcin had 21 digs and seven aces for Stonehill. … Carmel’s Erika Dombkowski, a freshman goaltender on the Oneonta State field hockey team, made four saves to record the shutout in a 2-0 win over Oswego. … Briarcliff’s Skyler Mosenthal, a sophomore on the Denison men’s cross country team, ran a 30:08 at the Great Lakes Colleges Association Championships and a 29:23 at the Calvin Invitational.

Yes, and it goes even deeper than that.
More people than ever before are wearing Duke Lacrosse T-shirts around town – not even just students, not just men: I’ve seen more than a few soccer moms running kids around wearing these shirts as well. Stores selling Duke apparel have moved their lacrosse t-shirts to the front, because they know the market for this stuff is hot right now.
And, in a DA election that’s coming up next month, the Durham DA’s most serious competition comes from a man (Cheek) who was encouraged by a pro-lacrosse lobby that doesn’t even mind that, if elected, Cheek has repeatedly maintained that he will not serve in the office. He has no desire to be DA – if he wins he will step aside forcing the governor to appoint a DA. He has stepped forward, and is finding support because the opposition to this case simply going to trial is so strong that people are hoping that by voting Nifong out of office they can derail this case. They call it the “anybody but Nifong” campaign and it is gaining speed. Nifong has been serving as DA since 1979 and prior to the Lacrosse case had a reputation for being fair, consistent, and effective. Now all of the sudden, he’s “America’s worst DA”.
